Revisions

31OCT2023 – This major update followed a nine month detailed review and rederivation of all equations in the SmartShot ballistic computer. Many minor changes were made to labels and equation notation but no major changes were required. The only functional errors corrected were the range wind equation and a velocity retention as a function of temperature at constant density the effect of which is mostly lost in the noise of a field environment. The SmartShot computer was also reviewed in detail by an independent person. Confidence in the SmartShot computer has continued to grow since the last revision in 2022 due to good performance reported by legacy users in new competitions and field work as well as several new users. This revision provides new control of input variables as  well as much expanded visibility of intermediate computations.

28DEC2022 – Changed the expry dates from 31DEC2022 to 31JAN2024. Added a tool to compute the station pressure given the barometric pressure referenced to sea level and the geometric altitude. Other minor editing changes to the text.

19DEC2022 – Added several video clips from the 2022 visit. More are planned for early 2023.

2OCT2021 – Changed “Products” to “Ballistic Solutions” to clarify the content.

30SEP2021 – Added an experimental version, Alt01, of 6xc to simplify management of htm files. If this works, I’ll add four more Alts so that five alternative variations  of the 6xc version can be saved on the browser page of a cell phone.

29SEP2021 – Removed the OoR report from the EHP tables of all three versions: 6xc, 308 and 223. No other changes were made.

23SEP2021 – The expry date was extended from 31SEP2021 to 31DEC2022. No other changes were made.

15FEB2021 – The font of 13 input variables, such as muzzle velocity, range, etc., that are required for a basic firing solution were changed to bold.  The expry date was extended to 31SEP2021.

22JAN2021 – Provided an evaluation 6xc version with new guidance for building a basic firing solution.

5JAN2021 –  Extended the expry date to 31JUL2021. Confirmed firing solutions for ranges from two yards on out.

30AUG2020 – Moved all target videos from the Tech Notes page to the new Target Behavior page.

12AUG2020 – Changed the Save function from “Save”, which by default changes the values in the file on the server to “Save Local” which saves the changes to the file in local memory. Necessary to enable SmartShot to off-line from the File Manager. Other minor format changes were made.

4AUG2020 – Significant update to correct for errors in: 1) Subsonic zeros, 2) First wind dot values for bullets with very high velocity retention values, 3) Inconsequential conversion factors. All base line trajectory references remain unchanged. Expiration dates were extended to 31DEC2020. The Users Manual was updated to include new parameters resulting from the technical update.

4NOV2019 – Added edited videos from the 2019 Africa testing and validation cycle.

18SEP2019 – The expiration dates for the three reference cartridges were extended to 30JUN2020. No other changes were made.

30APR2019 – The Tech Note, 190307 SmartShot Is Accurate AT Extreme Long Range was revised to correct minor errors and to improve the formatting of the tables.

11APR2019 – A large number of revisions were posted: 1) new 2018 video clips, 2) 2017, 2016 and 2015 clips were revised to include descriptive file names and incorporate 1/4 speed and still photos where appropriate, 3) a short history of trajectory analysis including a discussion of the limitations of ballistic coefficients, the advantages of Velocity Retention, the drag metric used in the SmartShot app and a comparison of SmartShot to several other popular ballistic apps which shows SmartShot to be more accurate in the subsonic regime.

1MAR2019 – This revision includes: 1. Two new Technical Notes; The first explains why SmartShot is better than traditional ballistic apps especially in the subsonic regime and introduces the drag metric, Velocity Retention. The second describes a process for saving any number of SmartShot versions for different rifle systems, 2. Two new videos; David Tubb’s record ELR 2200 yard shots and Robert Massey’s 2193 yard baboon shot, 3. A new page of Revision History and 4. Several minor editorial improvements.

12JUL2018 –This revision includes a new table of internet links to 27 video clips of long range baboon culling on the Tech Notes page. Detailed behavior observations, impact effects and response time measurements are included. Also on the TN page is a report of a called twofer with a double bank. A crosswind jump error is corrected and very long range zeros are now supported. The ballistic programs and the manual have been improved. The bullet table of VR values has been updated and enlarged.
