The SmartShot Ballistic App is available for three popular cartridges that represent the entire range of low drag rifle cartridges from the short range 223 Remington, the intermediate range 308 Winchester to the long range 6xc. The SmartShot app returns precisely the same ballistic output as does David Tubb’s Dynamic Targeting Reticle (DTR) App because the DTR App uses the ballistic equations that are the SmartShot App. The 6xc reticle will support every very long range cartridges we have tested such as the 364 GN 375 Warner Flat Line. These htm files function well with any popular browser on any device from large desk top computers to small smart phones. These reference versions can be modified and saved on any device so they will operate off-line. See Tech Note TN171203 to build a file structure for different rifles with different cartridges in different environments.
SmartShot will compute firing solutions from 2 yards to max range both in the main work space and the Range Table.
SmartShot needs only 13 pieces of primary input data, such as muzzle velocity, range, etc., to compute a basic firing solution. The remaining 18 can be ignored if Coriolis, aerodynamic crosswind jump, etc. are not required. These 13 input variables are highlighted in bold font.
The 231031 versions contain three changes: 1) The range wind error is fixed, 2) The original boundary layer model, which greatly understated the effect of the crosswind at long ranges, was replaced with an improved model and 3) I corrected an error which understated the effect of muzzle velocity on the VR values. Each 100 fps of muzzle velocity greater than nominal will decrease your VR by about 0.5 point for the 6xc solution: more for higher VRs and less for lower VRs.
The primary EHP calculations in the 240914 versions remain substantially unchanged from the 231031 update. Velocity retention values did not change. However the 240914 versions contain a new input variable, Boundary Layer Factor, cell O23, which is used to calibrate the increased crosswind hold that result from the new planetary boundary layer model that was added in the 231031 update. Initial testing shows that the computed wind drift should be corrected by a factor of 0.9.
A new output variable, Wind Hold in mph, cell C27, was added which is used as the aiming point for David Tubb’s Dynamic Targeting Reticle, DTR, app. It corrects the wind hold for non-nominal trajectories and long range zeros. The names of the wind hold output variables were changed to distinguish between wind wind deflections and wind holds.
